LITURGY COMMISSION

The purpose of this commission is to support the pastor in the celebration of the Parish liturgies with special attention to environment, music, and liturgical ministers. This commission meets monthly September to May.

Liturgical Roles are open to all confirmed Parish members who would like to be more involved with the Liturgy. These roles include the following:

 Ministers of Hospitality (Ushers)

Ushers serve as a team for each weekend Mass during a given month. However, all are invited to volunteer as needed for Holydays and vacancies on weekends. These volunteers strive to make people feel that they are welcome to worship as a member and friend of our Good Shepherd community. They promote a smooth flow of parishioners during arrival, seating, communion and exit. The ushers take up collections (offering) at each Mass on weekends and Holydays. Ushers are trained to respond in case of an emergency.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist – Extraordinary ministers assist the celebrant in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ to the congregation. All ministers are required to complete training by the Diocese and our parish.

Lectors – Lectors proclaim the Old and New Testament readings during the Liturgy of the Word at week-end and Holyday liturgies.

Commentators – The commentator greets and reads the introduction to the liturgy and general intercessions.

Mass Servers – Mass servers are open to parish youth, fourth grade or older who would like to get more involved with the Liturgy. Recruitment is done annually, with an initial training session.

Church Decorating – Volunteers are needed to assist during the liturgical seasons with church decorating to enhance our liturgical celebration.

Adult Choirs:

The Adult Choir enhances the worship life of the parish through music. As part of the congregation, the choir provides leadership and prayerfulness in the singing portion of the liturgy and hymns.

Volunteer Commitment:

 Sunday, 8:30am, St. James site
The choir sings regularly at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday liturgy, September through May, usually taking one Sunday off per month. The combined adult choirs from both sites provide the musical leadership for special Liturgies which might include Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week Services and Confirmation. Volunteers must attend the weekly rehearsal on Thursday evening from 7:00 -8:30 p.m., as well as a warm-up session held one half hour before any liturgy at which the choir sings.  All members of the parish are invited to join — high school students, college students and adults. New members are welcome to come to any Thursday rehearsal. Singers interested in singing only for Christmas or Holy Week and Easter, should come to rehearsals about six to eight weeks before the Holy Day.

Funeral Choir
This choir provides musical leadership at the Parish Funeral Liturgies and in doing so gives support to surviving family and friends of the deceased. The time commitment is primarily for the Funeral Liturgy itself, about one hour. Funerals  are usually held on weekday mornings at 10:00, 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. Each member is called for each funeral. Members come on days when they are available. Brief rehearsals are held as needed before of after a liturgy. The music consists mostly of unison hymns generally known to the congregation at large.
