MUSIC MINISTRY

The Choirs enhance the worship life of the parish through music. As part of the congregation, the choir provides leadership and prayerfulness in the singing portion of the liturgy and hymns.

The various choirs and musicians of Good Shepherd Parish enhance the worship life of the parish through their musical talent. As an extension of the congregation, these choirs provide leadership in the music portions of the liturgy and may offer additional musical selections as well. All members of the parish are invited to join. Musical groups include: Traditional Adult Choir, Folk Choir, Praise and Inspirational Gospel Choir, Funeral Choir, Latino Choir, and Children’s Choir.

Volunteer Commitment:

 1.  Saturday, 5:15pm, St. Joseph Site (June -November):

The Folk Choir leads the music at each Saturday liturgy except the second Saturday of the month. Music chosen is generally contemporary and accompanied by guitar, keyboard and other instruments as may be available. Rehearsals are held weekly on Fridays at 6:30 p.m. in September, October and November in our St. Joseph  church.  In December through May, rehearsals are on Thursday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. in our St. James church.  Additional warm-ups are held on Saturdays before the Mass at 4:15 p.m.

3.  Sunday, 8:30am, St. James site

The choir sings regularly at the 8:30 a.m. Sunday liturgy, September through May, usually taking one Sunday off per month. The combined adult choirs from both sites provide the musical leadership for special Liturgies which might include Christmas Midnight Mass, Holy Week Services and Confirmation. Volunteers must attend the weekly rehearsal on Thursday evening from 7:00 -8:30 p.m., as well as a warm-up session held one half hour before any liturgy at which the choir sings.  All members of the parish are invited to join — high school students, college students and adults. New members are welcome to come to any Thursday rehearsal. Singers interested in singing only for Christmas or Holy Week and Easter, should come to rehearsals about six to eight weeks before the Holy Day.

6.  Funeral Choir at St. James site:

This choir provides musical leadership at the Parish Funeral Liturgies and in doing so gives support to surviving family and friends of the deceased. The time commitment is primarily for the Funeral Liturgy itself, about one hour. Funerals  are usually held on weekday mornings at 10:00, 10:30 or 11:00 a.m. Each member is called for each funeral. Members come on days when they are available. Brief rehearsals are held as needed before of after a liturgy. The music consists mostly of unison hymns generally known to the congregation at large.

Opportunities also exist for vocalist and instrumentalists to share their musical abilities at  parish liturgies.
